The Obama administration is not yet ready to give up on an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement despite recent setbacks in ongoing negotiations.
Israel pulled out of talks Thursday in response to a unity accord between rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah reached the previous day.
If successful, the Palestinian agreement would see a national unity government formed in five weeks between Fatah and Hamas, a party that the U.S. views as a terrorist organization, and which has not been a party to ongoing peace talks.
"There's always a way forward, but the leaders have to make the compromises necessary to do that," said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry while speaking to reporters Thursday. "We will never give up our hope or our commitment for the possibilities of peace."
Kerry voiced his disappointment with the Palestinian unity accord during a phone call Thursday morning with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, according to State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
