US Open: Fourth Seed Wozniacki Upset

04.09.2015 09:04

Federer, Murray, Wawrinka qualify for third round.

Fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of Petra Cetkovska, ranked 149, at the U.S. Open tennis tournament on Thursday.

The result of the marathon match -- which ended 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(1) in 3 hours 2 minutes -- meant that only three of the top 10 women remained in the event in New York.

Cetkovska, a Czech, had ousted Wozniacki, who was last year's finalist, once before in the second round of Wimbledon in 2013.

In the other notable upset of the day, 94th-ranked Johanna Konta of Britain toppled ninth seed and 2015 Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza of Spain, 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-2.

The tournament's second seed Simona Halep from Romania and the 11th seed Angelique Kerber from Germany advanced to the third round with straight set victories over their opponents. Kerber will face the Belarusian and 20th seed Victoria Azarenka on Saturday.

In men's tennis, second seed Roger Federer cruised into the third round with a quick 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Steve Darcis of Belgium.

Third seed 3 Andy Murray overcame a two-set deficit against the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, 5-7, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.

The victory marks the eighth time in his career that he fought back from two sets down.

Fifth seed Stan Wawrinka defeated South Korean teenager Hyeon Chung in three sets, 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 7-6(6).
