US Police Fatally Shoot Another Unarmed Black Man

28.09.2016 21:18

A California town was poised for protests Wednesday after an officer fatally shot an unarmed black man following a call about a man who was "not acting like himself".

The deadly shooting in the San Diego suburb of El Cajon took place Tuesday afternoon after a caller described Alfred Olango as behaving erratically. Olango was identified by his family. Police have not yet officially identified him.

Olango was in his 30s and described in a statement by El Cajon police as refusing multiple instructions to remove his hand from his pocket.

He "rapidly drew an object" from his front pants pocket and, placing both hands together, extended his arms toward the officer, taking "what appeared to be a shooting stance".

One of two officers who arrived at the scene separately, had a stun gun drawn, and the other a pistol. Both fired at the same time, the statement said.

Police have not identified the object in question but confirmed it was not a weapon.

A Facebook video that captured the aftermath of the incident showed a woman self-identifying herself as the caller and yelling in a distraught voice: "I just called for help, and you came and killed him.

"Oh my God, you killed my brother. I called these people three times to help him," she said tearfully.

"He's sick, he needs help," she said. "I told you guys he's sick. You guys came and killed my brother."

An investigation is underway into the incident.

The shooting comes just days after 43-year-old black man Keith Lamont Scott was shot dead by police in Charlotte, North Carolina. Police claimed he was armed but multiple video evidence failed to prove he was pointing a gun when he was shot Sept. 20. A gun was recovered from the scene.

Four days before Scott's killing, another black man, Terrence Crutcher, was fatally shot by police, this time on the highway when he was unarmed and appeared to be complying with the officers' instructions.

Like Tuesday's incident, two officers fired a pistol and a stun gun simultaneously at Crutcher, killing him at the scene. -
