The U.S. will send more than $71 million in additional humanitarian assistance to meet "emergency needs" in the beleaguered Gaza Strip, Secretary of State John Kerry announced Monday.
The majority of the aid, $59 million, will be sent to the United Nations agency responsible for Palestine refugees for its programs in Gaza, according to the State Department. An additional $12 million will be given to other agencies, including the United States Agency for International Development.
The aid package is in addition to an announcement made July 21 by Kerry that the U.S. would send $47 million in humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
The coastal enclave was rocked by a 51-day military operation by Israel that the UN said Monday left more than 100,000 Palestinians without a home.
