The World Food Programme (WFP) began distributing food to Syrian families displaced by the recent surge in fighting around Aleppo. So far, WFP has reached 30,000 people who have gathered in towns near the Turkish border in search of safety and food for another 40,000 is on its way.

The food includes rice, lentils, pasta, white beans, vegetable oil, wheat flour, bulgur wheat, sugar, salt in parcels that are enough to feed a family of five people for one month.

WFP is also distributing ready-to-eat rations such as canned food for those who have no access to cooking facilities.

Even before the escalation in fighting in northern Aleppo, WFP was regularly delivering food across the Turkish border into Aleppo and Idleb governorates through the Bab al-Hawa and Bab al-Salam border crossings.

Every month almost 300 trucks carry food to Syria, and this number is expected to increase. At the moment, WFP is providing food for around 4 million people every month in both government and opposition-controlled areas of Syria.
