Woman Depicted As Suicide Bomber Takes Legal Action Against Pro-Gov't Takvim

04.09.2015 19:02

Diren Tat has taken legal action against the pro-government Takvim daily, which recently published a picture on its cover altered to depict her as a suicide bomber and member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist organization. Tat's lawyer, Cesim Parlak, has filed a criminal complaint against the newspaper and asked for compensation. Parlak explained to the press, “My client has been victimized and her security has been threatened, as she lives in fear of being attacked by her community because of this publication.” Returning from a wedding in the province of Tunceli, Tat was aboard a bus stopped by PKK militants, who forced the passengers to exit the vehicle and form a line in front of it, at which point they were exposed to PKK propaganda.

Parlak explained to the press, “My client has been victimized and her security has been threatened, as she lives in fear of being attacked by her community because of this publication.”

Returning from a wedding in the province of Tunceli, Tat was aboard a bus stopped by PKK militants, who forced the passengers to exit the vehicle and form a line in front of it, at which point they were exposed to PKK propaganda. In the original photograph, Tat can be seen in ordinary clothing with her head lowered as a uniformed militant stands in front of her. The daily altered this image to make it look as though Tat were wearing a PKK vest, depicting her as a suicide bomber.

“I was shocked when I saw it. In fact, I first thought my friend was playing a joke on me. I told my friend he did a good job with the image, because I didn't believe it,” Tat explained to the Cihan news agency.

“I'm anxious in my workplace now because my coworkers only know me so well. I'm only there to do my job. I would never have imagined in a million years that something like this would happen to me,” Tat remarked.

Her father, Erdal Tat, explained that her anxieties are shared by the whole family, stating: “I'm a local business owner. We are a normal family that goes about our business, but our reputation has now been destroyed. We are struggling to explain ourselves to those in our community who have now begun to view us with suspicion. My daughter's life is in danger, so now I pick her up from work every night. We are even thinking about moving out of our neighborhood.”
