Yemen's Hadi Meets Egypt Envoy

04.03.2015 19:48

President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi met Wednesday with Egyptian General Consul in Yemen, Mustafa al Rimali, at the presidential palace in Yemen's southern city of Aden.

President ABD Rabbuh Mansour Hadi met Wednesday with Egyptian General Consul in Yemen, Mustafa al-Rimali, at the presidential palace in Yemen's southern city of Aden.

"Egypt has always supported Yemen at all levels," Hadi wrote on his Facebook page, adding that Egypt's security was inseparable from that of Yemen.

Hadi noted that al-Rimali had told him that Egypt would continue to support Yemen until it emerges from its current hardship.

In February, Hadi fled Aden from capital Sanaa, where he had been placed under house arrest by the Houthis.

Upon his arrival to Aden, Hadi declared himself Yemen's "legitimate" leader, going on to assert that all Houthi decrees issued since last September were "null" and "illegitimate."

The Houthi group, for its part, has vowed to prosecute government officials that remain loyal to Hadi, who the Shiite group considers "illegitimate."

On Feb. 6, the Houthis issued a "constitutional declaration" dissolving parliament and establishing a 551-member transitional council.

The declaration, however, was rejected by most of Yemen's political forces – along with some neighboring Gulf countries – which described it as a "coup against constitutional legitimacy."

Although diplomats continue to pour into Aden to meet Hadi, the Houthis refuse to recognize his legitimacy, saying he is "wanted" by law courts.
