Yemen's Hadi Sacks Lahij, Abyan Governors

Yemeni President ABD Rabbuh Mansour Hadi on Sunday sacked the governors of the southern provinces of Lahij and Abyan, the media office of the Yemeni presidency has said.



The Yemeni President – now in Saudi Arabia – also appointed two other government officials in the place of the two sacked governors, according to the office.



The office did not, however, mention the reasons behind the decision of the President to sack the two governors.



Hadi fled to Saudi Arabia on Thursday after a Saudi-led military campaign started against his country's Shiite Houthi group hours earlier.



Saudi Arabia said the strikes were in response to calls by Hadi for military intervention to "save the people from the Houthi militias."



Fractious Yemen has been in turmoil since last September, when the Shiite militants overran capital Sanaa, from which they have sought to extend their influence to other parts of the country as well.



Some Gulf countries accuse Shiite Iran of supporting the Houthi insurgency.
