Yemen's Houthis Rush Arms To Sanaa Amid Fears

26.04.2015 21:33

Yemen's Shiite Houthi group has assembled a large number of its tanks and armored vehicles inside capital Sanaa for the first time amid fears that Yemen's ongoing conflicts would seep into the capital city, eyewitnesses said Sunday.

Yemen's Shiite Houthi group has assembled a large number of its tanks and armored vehicles inside capital Sanaa for the first time amid fears that Yemen's ongoing conflicts would seep into the capital city, eyewitnesses said Sunday.

They said this is the first time the Houthi group collects such a large number of military equipment inside Sanaa since the start of an anti-Houthi Saudi-led military operation on March 26.

The Houthis, the eyewitnesses said, have erected sand barriers in a number of Sanaa streets and created new checkpoints in these streets.

Sanaa residents express fears that heavy presence by the Shiite group in Sanaa would open the door for guerrilla warfare between the group and its opponents in the Yemeni capital.

Nevertheless, the eyewitnesses said the new Houthi checkpoints contained young Houthi militants, including some not older than 15.

Most of the residents of the Yemeni capital have fled it since the start of the Saudi-led campaign almost a month ago.

Late last month, Saudi Arabia and several other Arab states began striking – from air – Houthi positions across Yemen.

Saudi Arabia says the strikes come in response to appeals by embattled Yemeni President ABD Rabbuh Mansour Hadi – currently in Riyadh- for help against the Houthis, who overran capital Sanaa late last year and advanced on other provinces.

Yemen has remained in turmoil since 2011 when a popular uprising forced ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down a year later.
