Amnesty International announced that at least 100 civilians, including women and children, were killed in an airstrike carried out by the military in Nigeria's Zamfara state.
In a statement from the organization, it was reported that the Nigerian military conducted an airstrike on a market in the Zurmi area of Zamfara state on May 10. Dozens of people were also injured in the attack.
“UNLAWFUL AND UNACCEPTABLE”
Amnesty International emphasized that the attack targeting civilians cannot be justified in any way, stressing that the airstrikes are unlawful and unacceptable.
Ibrahim Garba Bello, a Red Cross official in the region, confirmed the attack, saying, “People are left at the mercy of bandits. There is nothing they can do.”
REACTION FROM THE UN
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk also condemned the attack in a written statement.
Türk expressed shock at reports that at least 100 civilians were killed and many others injured in the Nigerian military's airstrike on the market.
SIMILAR ATTACK LAST MONTH
Last month, the Nigerian military mistakenly carried out an airstrike on the Jilili market on the border of Yobe and Borno states, resulting in over 100 deaths.
