According to a study conducted by Areda Survey with the participation of 4,539 people across Turkey, which examines the perception of religiosity in Turkey, 21.5% of the Turkish population states that they have read the entire Quran translation, while 18.4% say they have never read it. Those who have read a part of the translation constitute the majority at 60.1%.
The research reveals that women read the Quran translation more than men. While 25.5% of women express that they have read the entire Quran translation, this rate is 17.4% among men. The percentage of women who have read a part of the translation is 62.1, while this rate is 58.1% among men. The percentage of women who have never read it is 12.5%, while for men, it is 24.5%.
25% OF YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE NEVER READ THE QURAN TRANSLATION
When looking at age groups, young people take the lead among those who answered "I have never read the Quran translation" with 25.2%. Among those who say "I have read a part of it," the highest rate is 67% in the 35-54 age range. Among those who say "I have read the entire translation," those aged 55 and over stand out with 35.3%.
MEN VIEW THEMSELVES AS MORE RELIGIOUS THAN WOMEN
Participants are also asked how they perceive their own religiosity. The definition of "very religious," which has been on the rise for the past two years (2022: 37.8%; 2023: 38.7%), reaches 39.1% this year. The percentage of those who see themselves as "somewhat religious" is 45.8%, while those who say "I am not very religious" account for 15.1% according to the research.
41.5% of men express that they are more religious than women (36.8%). Among age groups, the highest percentage of those who identify as "very religious" is found in the 18-34 age group, with 43%. In contrast, the highest percentage of those who identify as "not very religious" is among participants aged 55 and over, at 22.1%. Among those who define themselves as "somewhat religious," the highest percentage is 52.3% in the 35-54 age range.
THE PERCEPTION OF PARENTS AS "VERY RELIGIOUS" IS DECREASING
Participants are also asked how they evaluate their parents in terms of religiosity. The percentage of those who say "my parents are very religious," which was 59.1% last year, has decreased to 50.6% this year. The percentage of those who find their parents "somewhat religious," which has been around 30% in recent years, has increased to 42% this year, while the percentage of those who say "they are not very religious" has reached 7.5%, the highest level in the last four years.
