30.10.2014 12:03

At least 28 people were killed in a fresh round of fighting between Shiite Houthi militants and armed tribesmen in Yemen's central Al Bayda' province, a local official has said.

At least 28 people were killed in a fresh round of fighting between Shiite Houthi militants and armed tribesmen in Yemen's central Al-Bayda' province, a local official has said.

"Twenty-five Houthi militants and three tribesmen were killed in clashes that erupted on Wednesday and continued into Thursday in the Al-Zawb district," the official told Anadolu Agency.

He said the confrontations had ended on Thursday.

The Houthis have remained in control of capital Sanaa since September 21, when they inked a deal with Yemen's presidency aimed at ending an ongoing political stalemate.

Since then, the powerful Shiite group has sought to extend its control to other parts of the country.

Yemen has been dogged by political turmoil since a popular uprising that erupted in 2011 toppled longstanding president Ali Abdullah Saleh one year later.

Some Arab capitals accuse Shiite Iran of backing Yemen's ongoing Houthi insurgency.
