3 Chinese, Zambian Arrested For Unlawfully Imprisoning 2 Workers: Labor Commissioner

10.08.2022 20:57

Suspects also assaulted victims, says Givens Muntengwa.

Zambian police apprehended three Chinese and one Zambian on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting and unlawfully imprisoning two Zambian workers at Yundar Investment Limited, a Chinese-run company in the capital, Lusaka.

"The two workers, who were badly injured, were found locked up in the company's warehouse after a tip off from other workers. This is inhumane as people are supposed to work under a protected and conducive environment," Labour Ministry Commissioner Givens Muntengwa told reporters.

Muntengwa said it was discovered that the company was not complying with labor conditions.

"We recently received some complaints that Yundar Investment had gone back on the labor laws that they corrected after we warned them last year, hence the latest inspection has unearthed more non-compliance. The workers do not have personal protective clothing, no proper contracts and the working environment is not conducive," he said.

The Labour Ministry had fined Yundar Investment Limited 30,000 Zambian Kwacha ($1.84) for having its employees work for more than nine months without proper contracts.

Muntengwa said the fine should be settled before next Friday and workers were to be paid in arrears, in accordance with their positions or the company would be closed. -
