6,000-person chaos scenario put the Turkish Grand National Assembly on midnight alert

Tension rose ahead of the CHP Group Meeting. Both Özgür Özel and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu announced they would take the podium at the meeting scheduled for 13:30. Accreditation applications of 4,400 people on behalf of Özel's supporters and 1,400 on behalf of Kılıçdaroğlu's side raised concerns that nearly 6,000 people could face off at the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Due to the possibility of tension, the parliamentary administration went on alert at midnight, and security measures were increased.

The Ankara Regional Court of Appeals 36th Civil Chamber's decision of "absolute nullity" uploaded to the UYAP system on May 21 deemed the 38th Ordinary Congress of the CHP held on November 4-5, 2023, null and void. In line with the decision, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel and party bodies were dismissed, and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was appointed as the chairman.

Following the decision, a new debate began within the CHP. Özgür Özel, who is said to have received support from a significant portion of party delegates, members of parliament, and the voter base, announced that he would take the podium at the group meeting scheduled for today at 13:30 as the CHP TBMM Group Chair.

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu also stated that he is the CHP Chairman and announced that he will speak at the same meeting.

EYES TURNED TO THE CHP GROUP MEETING

The announcement that both figures will speak at the same group meeting has raised concerns about possible tensions in the parliament. In party circles, it is discussed that Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu is expected to receive support from about 20 CHP deputies, while the number of deputies supporting Özgür Özel could exceed 100.

Due to these developments, it is assessed that tensions may rise between supporters of the two sides during the group meeting.

ACCREDITATION APPLICATIONS DREW ATTENTION

The accreditation applications made by the parties to the Parliamentary Presidency before the group meeting have also reached striking proportions.

According to information reported by journalist Barış Terkoğlu on Onlar TV broadcast, Özgür Özel's aides requested accreditation for approximately 4,400 people. The application made on behalf of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu included about 1,400 names.

Considering these figures, it is stated that if no restrictions are applied, approximately 6,000 people could be present at the TBMM for the CHP Group Meeting.

SECURITY ALERT AT THE TBMM

Due to the possibility of tension, security measures at the TBMM have been raised to the highest level. All security personnel working at the parliament were called for an emergency meeting. In case the existing staff proves insufficient, the option of requesting additional support from the Ankara Provincial Police Department is also being considered.

According to claims discussed in ruling party circles, visitor entries may be restricted to prevent potential negative incidents in the parliament.

VISITOR ENTRIES MAY BE CLOSED

Among the options being evaluated by the parliament administration is allowing only deputies, duty personnel, and press members into the TBMM except in extraordinary circumstances. In this context, temporarily suspending visitor entries is also on the agenda.

Authorities are working on various scenarios to prevent undesirable scenes and potential conflicts within the TBMM.

WILL BE AT THE PARLIAMENT EARLY TO AVOID PODIUM CRISIS

It has been learned that individuals close to Özgür Özel and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu plan to go to the TBMM early in the morning to counter any possible podium disputes during the group meeting.

While both sides are reported to be preparing to take positions in the group hall early, all eyes are on today's CHP Group Meeting.
