6.6 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Papua New Guinea

19.04.2014 12:32

Another strong earthquake hits Solomon islands in the Pacific Ocean.

A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake rattled Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ocean on Saturday morning, The U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake, which occurred 24 kilometers below the seabed, centered 59 kilometers away from the Panguna town on Bougainville Island close to the Solomon Islands.

The Tsunami Warning Center announced that the quake did not trigger a tsunami threat.

Meanwhile, Turkey's official disaster relief agency reported another 6.5-magnitude strong earthquake in the Pacific Ocean's Solomon Islands.

The quake struck around GMT 1.04 a.m and occurred 64 kilometers below the seabed, the agency said.

On April 13, two separate earthquakes had hit the islands with magnitudes 7.6 and 7.5.

Earthquakes that measure between 6 and 6.9 magnitudes are classified as 'strong,' whereas the ones between 7 and 7.9 are called 'major' quakes.
