7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Mexico's West Coast

Pacific tsunami center issues tsunami warning for Mexico.

Mexico's National Seismological Service reported on Monday a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in the southwestern state of Michoacan.

Authorities have not reported any casualties or significant damages to infrastructure in the affected states. At the country's capital in Mexico City, historically one of the most vulnerable cities to earthquakes, Governor Claudia Sheinbaum reported no damages in the city.

However, air vehicles still patrol the city in search of any major damages.

"We're going to stop by and get some information. We sincerely hope that nothing serious has happened," said President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador outside of the National Palace in Mexico City.

The earthquake is a grim reminder to Mexicans who remember the devastating earthquake that occurred 37 years ago on Sept. 19, 1985, ranking 8.1 in magnitude and another on the same day in 2017, reporting 7.1 in magnitude.

About an hour before the earthquake in Michoacan, eight states of the country participated in a drill recalling both earthquakes.
