WOMEN WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THEIR MAIDEN NAMES ALONE BEFORE MARRIAGEThe Constitutional Court had previously invalidated the first and second sentences of Article 187 of the Civil Code, which made it mandatory for married women to carry their husbands' surnames, and granted women the right to use their maiden names if they wished. According to the 9th Judicial Package presented by the AK Party to the Turkish Grand National Assembly today, women will lose this right. According to the 9th Judicial Package, women will be able to continue using their maiden names only in conjunction with their husbands' surnames. "FOR THE SAKE OF FAMILY INTEGRITY"AK Party Group Chairman Abdullah Güler made statements regarding the content of the 9th Judicial Package they prepared. Güler said: "We are introducing a regulation regarding the surname of married women. In order to protect family integrity and prevent negative effects on children due to the surname to be used, we are implementing and proposing a new regulation that allows women to take their husbands' surnames when they get married and also use their maiden names if they wish."
