In Izmir, a 1-year-old baby boy died after being poisoned following a pest control operation conducted in the apartment where he lived.

SOME OF THE APARTMENT RESIDENTS WERE DISTURBED

The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 12, in an apartment located on 1413 Street in the Kahramanlar neighborhood of the Konak district. The apartment residents wanted to have pest control done by a company. After the pest control was carried out, some of the residents in the apartment were disturbed. The building residents reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center.

1-YEAR-OLD BABY DIED

It was determined that during the pest control operation, the 1-year-old baby boy T.A.K. was poisoned and lost his life. The affected baby's mother R.K. and father R.K., along with G.U., who lived in the building, were taken to nearby hospitals. It was learned that while mother R.K. and father R.K. were discharged, G.U. was still receiving treatment at Alsancak State Hospital.

3 EMPLOYEES OF THE COMPANY DETAINED

As part of the investigation into the incident, 3 employees of the company that conducted the pest control were detained by police teams.

3 APARTMENTS EVACUATED

Additionally, the apartment where the pest control was conducted, along with 2 adjacent apartments, were evacuated by the teams. Temporary shelter services were provided to the evacuated citizens by the Izmir Governorship, while AFAD Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear (CBRN) teams dispatched to the area began ventilation work in the buildings. The investigation initiated regarding the incident is ongoing.

PEST CONTROL WAS DONE DUE TO WOOD BORERS

Güven Uğurlu, who lives on the ground floor of the apartment, said, "Pest control was done on Monday, but these incidents happened this morning. Pest control is being done in the apartment on the fourth floor due to wood borers. These poisonings are occurring because of the pest control. The family of the deceased baby has not been here for three days. They came back last night, went to bed, and when we woke up in the morning, this situation occurred. We have no issues; our ventilation was closed. The baby's family and our neighbor upstairs are in the hospital. We have been outside for 6-7 hours," he said.

Neighborhood resident Mesrure Yılmaz stated, "When I opened the windows in the morning, I saw an ambulance and police cars. Then I saw a man being taken out from inside. He was probably the head of the household. His face was pale yellow, and later, police cars kept watch here all day. They evacuated us from our homes two hours ago because they opened the treated house," she said.

IZMIR GOVERNORSHIP: JUDICIAL INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING

In a statement made by the Izmir Governorship regarding the incident, it was stated: "On November 12, 2024, in an apartment located on 1413 Street in the Kahramanlar neighborhood of Konak district, after pest control conducted by the apartment residents, it was reported to the 112 emergency line that some of our citizens were affected by the pest control on November 14, 2024, around 11:30.
