It was announced that the number of fatalities in the disaster caused by the sinking of a catamaran-type passenger ship off the coast of Girne, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has risen to 8, and that no news has yet been received from 18 people. Following the disaster, a 3-day national mourning was declared in the country.

A major disaster occurred off the coast of Girne in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) when a catamaran-type passenger ship capsized. While search and rescue teams continue their efforts to reach the missing persons following the accident, it has been reported that the death toll has risen to 8.

DEATH TOLL RISES TO 8, 18 PEOPLE MISSING

TRNC President Tufan Erhürman announced in his statement regarding the accident that 8 people lost their lives in the disaster. Erhürman stated that there is still no news from 18 people.

While various units, in addition to the teams, are supporting the search and rescue efforts launched in the region after the accident, efforts to find the missing persons have been intensified.

Following the great sorrow the disaster caused in the country, the TRNC administration made an important decision. A 3-day national mourning was declared in the country due to the loss of life in the ship accident.

ERDOĞAN OFFERS CONDOLENCES TO ERHÜRMAN AND ÜSTEL BY PHONE

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also held a phone conversation with TRNC President Tufan Erhürman and TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel following the ship disaster off the coast of Girne.

During the conversations, Erdoğan conveyed his condolences for those who lost their lives in the accident.

SEARCH AND RESCUE EFFORTS TO CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT

TRNC President Erhürman said in his statement to the press that search and rescue activities will continue uninterrupted during the night hours.

Stating that Turkey has provided significant support to the ongoing efforts, Erhürman expressed that all means have been mobilized to reach the missing persons. Erhürman noted that they will make every possible effort to find the missing citizens.
