The death toll from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Mindanao region of the Philippines has risen to 37, with 456 people injured. Approximately 1,500 homes were completely destroyed, and more than 77,000 people were affected by the earthquake. Roads, bridges, and electrical infrastructure sustained serious damage, while many people have been unable to return to their homes due to aftershocks. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing.
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Mindanao region of the southern Philippines caused massive destruction. Authorities reported that the death toll from the earthquake near Kablalan town in the Soccsksargen region of Sarangani province has risen to 37.
It was stated that 456 people were injured in the earthquake, and missing person reports were filed for 4 individuals.
OVER 77,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED
According to information provided by authorities, a total of 77,186 people were affected by the earthquake. It was reported that most of the fatalities occurred due to falling debris from collapsed buildings.
Search and rescue efforts continue in the region as teams try to reach the individuals reported missing.
THOUSANDS OF HOMES DAMAGED
The earthquake caused severe damage to roads and bridges. According to initial assessments, 1,889 homes were damaged, with approximately 1,500 of them reported as completely destroyed.
Authorities stated that the extent of the damage is quite large and it is not yet known how long the reconstruction process will take.
GENERATOR SUPPORT FOR HOSPITALS
It was announced that generators and fuel have been dispatched to hospitals in the region due to damage to power transmission lines.
While food and water supplies were reported to be sufficient for now, it was noted that efforts to meet the basic needs of earthquake victims are ongoing.
AIRPORT ALSO DAMAGED
Authorities announced that General Santos Airport was also affected by the earthquake. Some flights were canceled due to the damage, while others were diverted to different airports.
Many people unable to return to their homes continue to wait in open areas, and the option of setting up tent cities in the region is being considered.
TSUNAMI WARNING ISSUED
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 55.2 kilometers. Numerous aftershocks ranging between magnitudes 4.6 and 6.5 were recorded following the tremor.
After the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for the Pacific coasts, and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on citizens living in coastal areas to move to higher ground.
