While military tensions between North Korea and South Korea continue, a move has come from Pyongyang that will further escalate the tension. In a statement from the South Korean Presidential Security Service (PSS), it was reported that a balloon carrying trash sent by Pyongyang exploded in the air and fell into the presidential office compound. The statement noted that the trash carried by the balloon was scattered around the compound, and inspections of the waste revealed no hazardous materials. SOUTH KOREA'S MILITARY HAD WARNEDThe South Korean military announced early in the morning that North Korea had sent new balloons carrying trash to the country's border regions. A warning was issued that the balloons could land in the capital Seoul and the border regions of Gyeonggi and Gangwon. THEY HAD BEEN TARGETED BEFOREThe South Korean presidential office compound in Seoul was first targeted by trash-laden balloons sent by North Korea on July 24. In a statement from the PSS, it was noted that a balloon carrying trash had landed in the presidential office compound, and it was stated that "the inspection conducted by chemical, biological, and radiological response teams found that the waste posed no danger or pollution." THE BALLOONS HAD CAUSED TENSIONIn response to South Korean activists sending propaganda leaflets into the country with balloons, North Korea had sent thousands of trash-carrying balloons to South Korea's border regions starting from May 28. In retaliation, the South Korean government set up large speakers in the border area and broadcast propaganda towards the North Korean border. Recently, North Korea claimed that South Korea had sent a drone carrying propaganda leaflets into the skies over Pyongyang.
