Under the leadership of Turkey, 52 countries along with 2 international and regional organizations requested the United Nations (UN) Security Council (UNSC) to take measures to halt the shipment of weapons and ammunition to Israel.
A JOINT LETTER FROM 52 COUNTRIES INCLUDING TURKEY
According to information obtained from diplomatic sources, Turkey initiated a joint letter effort within the UN to raise international awareness for the cessation of arms and ammunition sales to Israel. In order to implement the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice regarding the legal consequences of Israel's ongoing occupation, settlement, and annexation practices, as well as measures aimed at changing the demographic structure, character, and status of Jerusalem, a resolution was adopted in the UN General Assembly on September 18, 2024, with the affirmative votes of 124 countries, including Turkey.
CALL TO "HALT ARMS AND AMMUNITION SALES TO ISRAEL"
With this resolution, all countries were called upon to take measures to halt the supply or shipment of weapons, ammunition, and related equipment to Israel in situations where there are reasonable grounds that they could be used in the occupied Palestinian territories. In this context, upon the proposal of Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, a joint letter initiative was launched within the UN to raise international awareness for the cessation of arms and ammunition sales to Israel.
The initiative aims to prevent Israel from continuing its violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law, including in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in Gaza, by halting arms and ammunition sales to Israel.
The letter emphasizes the deep concern over the escalating violence and violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza, Lebanon, and other regions of the Middle East. It points out that civilian casualties, mostly consisting of women and children, are increasing every day as a result of these violations, and it states that urgent steps must be taken to stop this dangerous trend.
THE LETTER WAS SUBMITTED TO THE UN SECRETARY-GENERAL
The letter called on the international community to halt the supply and shipment of arms and ammunition to Israel and requested the UNSC to take measures in this regard. The letter was delivered on November 1 to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the UK, which is the rotating president of the UN Security Council for November, and UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang. Turkey believes that the immediate cessation of arms and ammunition supply and shipment to Israel, in light of its ongoing war policy in the region, particularly in Gaza, is a legal and moral obligation of the international community.
