A fire broke out at the Moss Landing Power Plant, one of the largest power plants in the world, located in California, USA. More than a thousand people were forced to leave their homes due to the toxic smoke spreading in the area. In the facility, located 210 kilometers from San Francisco, the fire that started on Thursday burned 40% of the stored batteries. An emergency was declared in the area due to the thick black smoke covering the sky. Monterey County spokesperson Nicholas Pasculli stated, "It is vital for our citizens to comply with the evacuation order for their safety. We ask them to heed the guidance of our security forces and firefighting teams." Firefighting teams are on standby to intervene in the fire, but water cannot be used due to the special structure of the batteries. According to officials, the batteries are expected to self-extinguish. While educational institutions in the area were closed for Friday, residents of Santa Cruz, located 12 kilometers away, were asked to keep their windows closed and turn off their air conditioners. In a written statement from the facility's operator, Vistra Corp, it was stated, "Our priority is the safety of the public and our employees. We thank the emergency teams for their dedicated efforts." While the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, it was reported that the investigation would begin after the fire is extinguished. Similar incidents had occurred at the same facility in 2021 and 2022.
