A fire broke out in the house of Turgay Gezgin, an employee of the Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Nazilli Fire Station, located on the 2nd floor of the apartment on 372 Street in the Yeşil Neighborhood of Nazilli, Aydın, in the early hours of March 18. Firefighters, police, and medical teams were dispatched to the address upon the notification of the surrounding residents. The fire was extinguished with the intervention of the teams.
THE FIREFIGHTER'S WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN DIED IN THE FIRE
During the investigation at the house, it was determined that Gezgin's wife, Fatma Gezgin, and their children, Deniz (11) and Toprak Gezgin (4), lost their lives. Turgay Gezgin, who returned from a night shift, collapsed. After the first intervention, Gezgin was taken to Nazilli State Hospital by ambulance. Fatma Gezgin and her two children were buried in Eğriboyun Cemetery after the autopsy procedures.
TURGAY GEZGİN WAS ARRESTED, HIS FIANCEE WAS RELEASED
In the investigation regarding the fire, Turgay Gezgin, who has been working at the Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Nazilli Fire Station for 11 years, was detained by the police on charges of arson. Shortly after the incident, his fiancée, F. T., a nurse at Nazilli State Hospital, was also detained. After their procedures at the police station, the two suspects were referred to the courthouse. Gezgin was arrested at the courthouse, while his fiancée, F. T., was released under judicial control.
HE COMMITTED SUICIDE IN PRISON
It was learned that Turgay Gezgin, who was transferred from Nazilli E-Type Closed Prison to Adana F-Type High Security Closed Prison a while ago, hanged himself on the bunk bed in his cell this morning.
BRUTALITY IN 12 MINUTES
The fire, which broke out only in the bedroom and did not spread to another room, was deemed suspicious by the security forces. In a detailed examination conducted under the instruction of the prosecutor's office, it was determined that Turgay Gezgin, who fainted after the fire, had entered and exited the house shortly before the fire, according to security camera footage.
As part of the investigation conducted by the Nazilli Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, security camera footage showing the entry and exit times of firefighter Turgay Gezgin on the day of the incident was also included in the case file.
In the footage showing the moment of his first exit from the house, Gezgin arrives in front of the building on his motorcycle at 07:00. Before getting off the motorcycle, Gezgin looks towards the building and then enters the apartment. About 2 minutes later, the firefighter exits the building, gets on his motorcycle, and leaves. At 07:59, Gezgin returns home, this time parking his motorcycle in a place out of the camera's view. The firefighter goes outside again at 08:11, approximately 12 minutes later.
HE WARNED HIS WIFE
Additionally, in the investigation conducted by the Nazilli Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the arrested firefighter Turgay Gezgin stated in his testimony at the prosecutor's office that he and his wife had previously decided to separate, but they reconciled due to family interference, and their relationship deteriorated again.
Gezgin stated that he usually drank alcohol outside at night and did not visit home often. He explained that on the night of the incident, he was on the balcony while his wife was in the living room.
Gezgin said, "While I was on the balcony, my wife Fatma sent me a message via WhatsApp around 03:30, saying there was a smell of natural gas. Upon this, I checked the natural gas pipes and line, but I did not smell anything. We had renovations done about 10-15 days ago, but I did not smell anything again. I remember that my wife went to the kitchen to prepare sahur because she was fasting before the call to prayer. I also left the house to change my clothes and go to the fire station. At that time, she was in the kitchen."
After staying at the fire station for a while, Gezgin stated that he went home to get a pastry from Uzun Çarşı and his jacket. "At that time, the key was with me. The key to the outer door of the apartment and the key to the inner apartment door were on the same keychain. I usually open the outer door with a code. I do not remember how I opened it that day. Around 07:00, I opened the apartment door and went inside to get my jacket. At that time, I did not smell any natural gas, soot, or smoke. I did not see anything suspicious. I put on my jacket and left the building and went back to the fire station," he defended.
"I DID NOT RESPOND TO MY WIFE'S MESSAGES"
When he first arrived at the fire station, Gezgin stated that he saw the messages his wife sent him, saying, "Don't come too late, let's go to the market, when people wake up, will you call the landlord or the one who did the natural gas, call someone, check the smell," but he did not respond. He claimed that he generally left his wife's messages unanswered.
"I TURNED BACK WHEN THE DOOR DID NOT OPEN"
He told his wife at 07:00...
```
Gezgin, who stated that he called several times like 45, and after not answering the phone, he went home, said the following:
"At that time, it was around 08:00. I encountered my neighbor while going upstairs. He was also leaving his apartment. When I reached the apartment door, I didn't smell anything. I realized that I didn't have my key with me. I tried to open it with a card, but I couldn't. I rang the bell, knocked on the door, and waited after knocking about 3-4 times. If I had knocked every two minutes, it would have taken about 8-10 minutes. While I was knocking on the door upstairs, I heard my neighbor leaving from the apartment in the basement below. After a while, I also went out. I didn't hear or see anyone else."
HE HAD CHANGED HIS STATEMENT REGARDING THE TIME HE WENT HOME
In response to the prosecutor's question, "In your previous statements, you said you last came home at 07:00 to get your coat, but now you say you came around 08:00-08:10 and stayed in front of the apartment for about 10 minutes. What do you have to say about this contradiction?" Gezgin replied, "I don't have the luxury of lying. There are cameras everywhere, and I might not have remembered this issue in the statements I gave at the prosecutor's office or the police station."
Gezgin stated that after going to the market, he returned home upon his neighbor's call, wanting to enter but unable to do so due to heavy smoke.
"BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN"
The prosecutor had asked Gezgin about the messages sent by his fiancée, the suspect F. T, before the incident, saying "bad things are going to happen."
In response to the question, Gezgin said, "My feelings are strong. In different events, good or bad things have occurred as a result of my feelings. Regarding the divorce, I told him that I would get divorced. I mentioned that there was a case, but I didn't say that the case was a divorce case; it could be a file I witnessed."
HE NEVER WENT TO THE CEMETERY
F. T, whose statement was taken, said that after the incident, his family and friends told him that Gezgin did not go to the cemetery, and Gezgin had expressed to him that he did not believe his children were dead.
"I SUSPECT YOU, I DON'T WANT TO MEET"
F. T, who stated that she got engaged to Gezgin on May 11, continued:
About 10-15 days before this incident, he told me, 'I have bad feelings, something like an earthquake or death is going to happen, it will affect me.' One day before the incident, he told me, 'I have a divorce case tomorrow, this will end.' I told him, 'My divorce took 8 years; it doesn't happen that quickly.' He said to me, 'Mine will happen; we talked and agreed, everything will end.' After what he said both 10-15 days ago and one day ago, I started to suspect him after this incident. I told him, 'I suspect you, I don't want to meet.' I blocked him many times, but he convinced me verbally. Even though I was convinced and continued to meet, I didn't trust him since this incident."
HE SOUGHT "HEAVY SLEEP INDUCING MEDICATION"
It was learned that Gezgin went to a veterinarian one day before the incident and requested "heavy sleep-inducing medication." Additionally, the autopsy report from Adnan Menderes University Hospital stated that the cause of death for the mother and her two children was due to carbon monoxide.
