In the Agaie region of northern-central Nigeria, a fuel tanker collided head-on with a truck, where fatal traffic accidents frequently occur. A LARGE NUMBER OF ANIMALS ALSO PERISHEDA massive explosion occurred as a result of the collision, and 48 people lost their lives in the horrific incident. Sources stating that the truck was carrying cattle announced that at least 50 of the animals were burned alive. SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS ARE ONGOINGAbdullahi Baba-Arab, the General Manager of the State Emergency Management Agency, stated that search and rescue operations are ongoing at the accident site. Baba-Arab initially stated that 30 bodies were found, but later announced that the bodies of 18 more victims who died in the collision by burning were also found. The official also mentioned that the deceased were buried collectively. 1531 FUEL TANKER ACCIDENTS OCCURRED IN 2020According to the Nigeria Federal Road Safety Corps, there were only 1,531 fuel tanker accidents in 2020, resulting in 535 deaths and 1,142 injuries.
