The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) has updated its list of companies it alleges are linked to the Chinese military. The new list includes tech giants Alibaba and Baidu, as well as electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. The list, which does not impose direct sanctions, aims to warn U.S. companies about potential security risks of doing business with these Chinese firms.

The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) updated the "1260H" list, which includes companies assessed as being linked to the Chinese military.

It drew attention that some prominent Chinese technology and automotive companies were also included in the updated list.

ALIBABA, BAIDU, AND BYD ADDED TO THE LIST

The new list published by the Pentagon includes tech giant Alibaba, one of China's largest internet companies Baidu, as well as BYD, one of the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturers.

These companies are assessed by US officials as being connected to China's military and defense industry.

DOES NOT MEAN SANCTIONS

The list prepared by the Pentagon does not foresee direct sanctions. However, it aims to warn US institutions and companies about the potential risks of doing business with Chinese firms.

The list covers more than 100 Chinese companies from various sectors including aviation, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, communications, computer hardware, and construction.

HOW ARE COMPANIES CRITERIA FOR INCLUSION?

For a company to be included on the list, it must operate directly or indirectly in the US and be assessed by the Pentagon as contributing to China's military capacity or defense industry.

This step, taken amid ongoing technological and trade competition between the US and China, is seen as a new reflection of tensions between the two countries.
