It has been announced that food labels, advertisements, and visuals used in brochures will be subject to scrutiny if they are misleading. Expressions such as "100% natural," "real natural," "genuine natural," and "the most natural" can no longer be used.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has updated the "Turkish Food Codex Food Labeling and Consumer Information Regulation Guide," which includes the rules that food businesses must comply with. The guide includes regulations regarding the basic visuals of food packaging.

USE OF VISUALS

Accordingly, it has been assessed that the images and illustrative representations used on food labels, advertisements, brochures, and web pages may be more effective on consumers than the name of the food and other explanatory statements. In this context, the mentioned images and representations will be subject to examination and control in the same scope as misleading terms and expressions for consumers. Background representations and images will be placed in a way that does not mislead consumers regarding the type, composition, quality, or origin of the food.

On the label of a food product that uses a flavoring instead of a food component, the actual visual of that food component cannot be used. It will be stated that the food is flavored. For products such as fruits, vegetables, or spices, the actual visual must be included if the flavoring comes from those products instead of a flavoring agent.

For example, in a food product containing strawberry or peach, where more flavoring is used than these fruits, the visual of strawberry or peach cannot be prominently displayed.

Even if the term "flavored" appears in the name of the food due to special regulations, if the product contains more fruit, vegetables, and spices than flavoring, the actual food visual can be used.

REGULATION ON THE USE OF THE TERM "NATURAL"

In foods where some stages of production are not performed by hand, the term "handmade" will only apply to the stage of production that is done by hand. For example, if a producer does not knead the dough by hand but rolls out the dough by hand, the term "handmade" can be used. However, if some processes in stuffed grape leaves are done by hand but the stuffing process is done by machine, it would not be appropriate to use this term.

The guide also includes regulations regarding the use of the term "natural." Dairy products that have not used any components other than the cultures and enzymes necessary for their production will be defined as "natural." In this context, dairy products such as yogurt and kefir will also be considered "natural." However, expressions such as "100% natural," "real natural," "genuine natural," and "the most natural" cannot be used.

GLUTEN-RELATED VOLUNTARY INFORMATION

According to the guide, the term "daily" will only be used for foods with a shelf life of 24 hours. If this term is used, the production date must be provided in accordance with the regulation. The term "daily" cannot be used in pasteurized drinking milk. Expressions such as "real honey," "real fruit/fruity," "genuine Maraş Ice Cream," "real chocolate," or "real flavor" cannot be preferred to emphasize the group's name or components of the food.

To inform individuals with gluten intolerance, statements regarding this substance have also been regulated for all food groups within the scope of the Turkish Food Codex. If the gluten content in the food is a maximum of 20 particles (ppm) when sold to the end consumer, expressions such as "gluten-free," "contains no gluten," or "there is no gluten" can be used. In addition to these expressions, statements such as "suitable for individuals with gluten intolerance" or "suitable for celiac patients" may also be included.

If specially produced, and the gluten content is a maximum of 20 ppm when sold to the end consumer, there will be no issue in using the expressions "specially formulated for individuals with gluten intolerance" and "specially formulated for celiac patients."

Upon consumer request, information will be provided by the operator regarding the components of the foods served to consumers in mass consumption places. Information regarding allergens, alcohol, and pork-derived components will be included if present in the food composition.
