The President of the Competition Authority, Birol Küle, stated that they will also use artificial intelligence-based tools in competition investigations, and the most fundamental output of this work will be in the service and food sectors.
Küle evaluated the recent investigations carried out by the Authority and the artificial intelligence project.
Recalling that inflation was announced as 2.24% monthly and 47.09% annually in November, Küle said that the highest monthly increase in consumer prices occurred in the food and non-alcoholic beverages group, with an increase of 5.1%.
Küle pointed out that the highest annual increase in inflation was observed in service sectors such as education, housing, restaurants, and hotels. ESSENTIAL NEED PRODUCTS UNDER THE MICROSCOPEKüle emphasized that they are conducting examinations in sectors related to essential need products, which are particularly important for low-income citizens, stating that the Authority has conducted more than 100 competition violation investigations in the food, agriculture, forestry, fishing, and livestock sectors from 2015 until September 10, 2024.
Küle reported that in the first nine months of this year, 14 investigations were concluded, including 7 investigations and 7 preliminary investigations, and said: "We are closely monitoring sectors experiencing price increases and rigidity. Red and white meat, as well as eggs and supermarkets, are among our priorities. In this context, the investigations completed in 2024 in the food and related sectors were related to packaged water, snack products, honey, hazelnuts, spices, and the white meat sector. Recently, we have imposed approximately 1.2 billion lira in fines on businesses operating in the white meat sector, and the investigation is still ongoing. Fines of 98 million lira were imposed on businesses in the egg production and sales sector, and approximately 55 million lira on businesses operating in the tray sector."WE WILL MONITOR CLOSELY WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE"Küle stated that they will continue to monitor these sectors using traditional investigation methods, saying, "We will now monitor these sectors much more closely with artificial intelligence-based tools." Küle mentioned that leading indicators, including sub-sectors, will be determined based on various data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute, and noted: "With these leading indicators, we aim to detect potential price and similar market anomalies in advance using 'machine learning' algorithms, as well as to analyze anomaly situations supported by other variables. In this sense, we will conduct investigations ex officio and swiftly in sectors where price anomalies are observed. The most fundamental outputs of this project will be especially in the service and food sectors. We will continuously monitor red meat, white meat, eggs, and the retail sector, as well as supermarkets, with our artificial intelligence-supported tools and intervene when necessary."
