The North Korean Lazarus Group has launched a new attack targeting cryptocurrency wallets by exploiting a 'zero-day' vulnerability in Google Chrome. The operation, conducted through a fake NFT game called DeTankZone, was detected by Kaspersky Labs in May and was quickly blocked by Google.

The cybersecurity threat has alarmed cryptocurrency users worldwide. The game developed by the Lazarus Group could capture wallet information through its website, even if users did not download it. The danger detected by Microsoft Security in February was recorded as a 'zero-day' vulnerability in Chrome.

Chrome Users Under Threat of Cyber Attack

Kaspersky Labs experts discovered a vulnerability described as a "type confusion error in the V8 JavaScript engine" following the malware called Manuscrypt. The security flaw, which Google closed in 12 days, once again highlighted the importance of security measures in the crypto ecosystem.

The game developed by the Lazarus Group, called DeTankZone or DeTankWar, had fully playable features modeled after the existing DeFiTankLand. Actively promoted on LinkedIn and X platforms, the game used NFTs as tanks in a global competition.

According to the report by cryptocurrency crime researcher ZachXBT, the group seized over $200 million in cryptocurrency through 25 different attacks between 2020 and 2023. The U.S. Department of the Treasury confirmed that the group stole $600 million worth of cryptocurrency in the 2022 Ronin Bridge attack. According to research by Recorded Future, North Korean hackers stole a total of $3 billion in cryptocurrency assets between 2017 and 2023.
