A passenger plane crash near Juba, the capital of South Sudan, has killed 15 people on board. Contact with the aircraft, which had taken off from Yei, was lost about half an hour after departure. While the wreckage is reported to have struck a mountainous and foggy area, initial findings suggest that adverse weather conditions may have played a role in the accident.

CONTACT LOST HALF AN HOUR AFTER TAKEOFF

According to a statement from the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA), the Cessna 208 Caravan passenger plane took off from Yei city at 09:15 local time bound for Juba International Airport. Contact with the air traffic control tower was lost approximately half an hour after takeoff.

DEATH TOLL RISES TO 15

The initial death toll, announced as 14, was updated following investigations. It was confirmed that all 14 passengers and 1 pilot on board had died. It was reported that 2 of the deceased were Kenyan citizens, while 13 were South Sudanese.

WRECKAGE ENGULFED IN FLAMES

According to initial assessments by teams arriving at the scene, the aircraft crashed into a mountainous and foggy terrain approximately 20 kilometers southwest of the capital. It was stated that the wreckage was engulfed in flames.

FOGGY WEATHER SUSPECTED

Authorities announced that the investigation into the exact cause of the crash is ongoing. Initial findings indicate that adverse weather conditions reducing visibility may have led to the accident.
