The Iranian Ministry of Justice announced today that a person convicted of "spreading corruption on earth" for attacking dozens of women in the capital has been executed. According to the Ministry of Justice's news site Mizan Online, Rastgooei Kandolaj used a carpenter's tool to attack at least 59 women and "terrorized Tehran." Mizan reported that many women had reported that the attacker was masked and on a motorcycle during the assaults that took place in November 2018. The report did not specify when Kandolaj was arrested. According to Mizan, he was sentenced to death for the crime of "spreading corruption on earth." It was stated that "the death sentence of Rastgooei Kandolaj, who terrorized women and girls in Tehran with a carpenter's tool, has been carried out." Kandolaj had appealed the case and requested a retrial, but the Supreme Court rejected this request by upholding the initial ruling. Iran applies the death penalty for serious crimes such as murder and drug trafficking, as well as for rape and sexual assault. According to human rights groups like Amnesty International, Iran is the country that carries out the most executions annually after China, where reliable data is lacking. According to the Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization (IHR), there is a new increase in executions in 2024. The organization reported that 166 executions, the highest number recorded in a single month since it began keeping execution records in 2007, occurred in October alone. The method of execution is often hanging by crane, and executions can be carried out in public. Activists claim that Iran uses the death penalty to instill fear in society, especially following nationwide protests in 2022-2023.
