A fire broke out in a fuel-loaded tanker on the road in Mersin. It was reported that the tanker, which experienced explosions from time to time, was carrying a total of 26,000 liters of fuel, including 7,863 liters of gasoline and 18,142 liters of diesel.
A fuel-laden tanker caught fire on the connection road in Mersin. The fire was extinguished with the intervention of the fire department; those moments were captured on camera.
FIRE BROKE OUT WHILE IN MOTION
The incident occurred on the highway connection road known as Tarsus-Adana-Gaziantep (TAG) 151st street, within the borders of the Camili neighborhood in the central Toroslar district. According to the information received, a tanker loaded with diesel, with the license plate 26 VF 647 and driven by Ebubekir Güven, caught fire while heading towards the highway entrance. The driver noticed the fire, pulled the vehicle over to the right lane, and reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center. The center dispatched numerous teams from the police and the Mediterranean Fire Group Directorate of Mersin Metropolitan Municipality to the area. Meanwhile, flames engulfed the tanker, and black smoke filled the sky. Explosions also occurred from time to time.
EXPLOSIONS OCCURRED DURING EXTINGUISHING WORK
The fire department's group teams initiated a controlled and high-risk intervention on the burning tanker. During the approach tactic of the teams, the tanker exploded with a loud noise. With the explosion, the vehicle turned into a ball of fire. Thanks to the professional intervention method of the fire department personnel, the incident was managed without any injuries. After the traffic teams closed the road, support teams from the Central, Yenişehir, and Mezitli Fire Group Directorates were also directed to the area. A comprehensive extinguishing operation was carried out using foam and water from the ground with three separate teams from an aerial ladder vehicle. As a result of the coordinated effort, the fire was brought under control, and cooling operations began.
AVOIDED A MAJOR DISASTER
After the fire, the road was opened to traffic in a controlled manner from a single lane, while a comprehensive washing operation was carried out by teams from the Parks and Gardens Directorate of the Metropolitan Municipality to prevent the accumulated foam and fuel on the ground from causing an accident. It was reported that the exploded tanker was carrying 7,863 liters of gasoline and 18,142 liters of diesel, and despite the magnitude of the risk, a major disaster was avoided thanks to the rapid and correct intervention of the fire department. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
