A young woman in Iran protesting the headscarf law by walking around a university campus in her underwear and subsequently being detained and allegedly taken to a 'mental hospital' has caused a significant uproar. The unidentified young woman was detained by security forces on Saturday at the Science and Research Campus of Islamic Azad University in Tehran. In footage that quickly spread on social media, the woman is seen sitting and walking around the campus in her underwear. University spokesperson Amir Mahjoub confirmed the incident, stating, "Campus security intervened due to the student's inappropriate behavior, and she was handed over to law enforcement. The reasons for the student's actions are being investigated." Mahjoub also mentioned that "it was determined at the police station that the woman was under severe psychological pressure and had a mental disorder." However, social media users claimed that the woman's actions were a conscious protest. One user commented, "For most women, being in public in their underwear is one of the biggest nightmares. This is a reaction to the insistence on the mandatory headscarf." According to a bulletin from student groups, the young woman was severely injured while being detained. The bulletin stated, "She was harassed for not wearing a headscarf, and her clothes were torn by security forces. Blood traces were found on the car's tires." The Iranian branch of Amnesty International demanded the immediate release of the student and called for an investigation into the allegations of violence during the detention.
