Abdullah Gul Should Be Pm: Ak Party Mp

18.04.2014 16:48

Without Gul as Prime Minister, the AK Party would have difficulty in achieving the parliamentary majority required for constitutional reforms following the June 2015 elections, says Alaboyun, head of Parliament's NATO committee.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul should be the Prime Minister after the presidential elections in August 2014, said Ali Riza Alaboyun, Member of Parliament (MP) for the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party.

Speaking on Friday with Anadolu Agency, MP Alaboyun reviewed Turkey's agenda  heading into presidential elections in August, after Gul's statement Friday about his political career when his presidential term, which will end in August. President Gul said, "Under the current conditions, I have no future political plans."

Pointing to the potential nomination of current Prime Minister Erdogan for the presidential elections, Alaboyun told AA that Gul should return to the ruling AK Party as party leader, adding, "Our movement has two leaders in the public eye, the first being Erdogan, the second being Gul, so Gul should be PM."

Alaboyun, who also heads the Turkish Parliament's NATO Committee, said without Gul as Prime Minister, the AK Party would have difficulty in achieving the parliamentary majority required for constitutional reforms following the June 2015 elections.

"If we want to receive more than 50 percent of the votes and to have the majority at the parliament large enough to change the constitution, Gul should be Prime Minister," Alaboyun stressed.

The Turkish presidential elections are scheduled for August 10.
