After the appointment of trustees to 3 municipalities, Mansur Yavaş makes a surprising statement.

04.11.2024 10:41

Regarding the appointment of trustees to Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, Batman Municipality, and Halfeti Municipality, ABB President Mansur Yavaş stated in a post on his X account, "As a legal expert, my opinion is that the Turkish Grand National Assembly should urgently make a legislative change in its first meeting to allow for the election of someone from the municipal council to replace the removed president, ensuring that the will of the voters is reflected in the municipality."

The Ministry of Interior appointed trustees to the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, Batman Municipality, and the Halfeti municipality of Şanlıurfa, which is managed by the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party).

GOVERNORS AND DISTRICT GOVERNORS ASSUME OFFICE

Police cordoned off the municipal buildings in the morning hours. Mardin Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Türk, Halfeti Mayor Mehmet Karayılan, and Batman Mayor Gülistan Sönük were dismissed. Mardin Governor Tuncay Akkoyun was appointed as trustee to the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, Batman Governor Ekrem Canalp to the Batman Municipality, and Halfeti District Governor Hakan Başoğlu to the Halfeti Municipality.

SURPRISING STATEMENT FROM MANSUR YAVAŞ

While the repercussions of the incident continue, a flash statement came from Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş. In his statement, Yavaş said, "As a lawyer, my opinion is that the Turkish Grand National Assembly should urgently make a legal amendment in its first meeting to ensure that a member from the municipal council is elected in place of the dismissed mayor, reflecting the will of the voters in the municipality."

Here is the statement made by Yavaş;

"Today, we started the day again with trustee appointments. First and foremost, what needs to be defended here is the law and democracy, independent of the individuals involved. In democracies, sometimes elections are won, sometimes they are lost. The public can choose someone you least want. The important thing is to come to terms with that.

On one hand, those who have a conviction are made candidates knowing that a trustee will be appointed (at least with the foresight of past years), while on the other hand, the administration-election-Supreme Election Council should be questioned as to why they allowed these candidates to run.

The disregard for the will of the people in this way will inevitably lead to voters becoming increasingly distant from the ballot box. Let the public evaluate the mayors based on what they have done and what they have not done. Parties should determine their candidates accordingly and not challenge the process by selecting candidates.

As a lawyer, my opinion is that the Turkish Grand National Assembly should urgently make a legal amendment in its first meeting to ensure that a member from the municipal council is elected in place of the dismissed mayor, reflecting the will of the voters in the municipality. It should not be forgotten that the law is as essential to people as air and water."
