After the increase in the minimum wage, supermarkets started changing their prices.

26.12.2024 11:00

Supermarkets, seizing the opportunity of the minimum wage increase, raised their prices and updated their labels before the raise could reach the employees' pockets.

The minimum wage for 2025, which millions have been eagerly waiting for, has been announced. Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan stated that the minimum wage for 2025 has been set at 22,104 TL with a 30% increase. The minimum wage support provided to employers has also been raised to 1,000 TL. However, before the increase reaches the employees, opportunists have already taken action. Supermarkets started printing new labels vigorously the day before and the day after the price hike.

CHANGE DATES CAUGHT ATTENTION

In many supermarkets, the change dates for prices and labels drew attention. This change also became a topic on social media. On the other hand, the written statement made by the Ministry of Trade, anticipating this opportunism, came to mind.

MINISTRY: WILL BE PUNISHED SEVERELY

In a statement made by the ministry, the following expressions were included: "The minimum wage for 2025 has been determined and announced by the Minimum Wage Determination Commission yesterday. We wish that the minimum wage, which will be applied as a net wage of 22,104 TL for 2025 with a 30% increase, will be beneficial for all our employees and our country.

In this context, we would like to warn once again the sellers of goods and services who will try to increase prices at the same rate as the minimum wage increase, as if all costs were labor costs.

Firstly, the minimum wage will be paid at the end of January 2025. Secondly, labor costs constitute only a part of the total costs. Therefore, we warn those who want to convert the increase rate of the minimum wage into the price increase rate with great greed.

The inspection teams of the Ministry of Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Provincial Trade Directorates, Provincial Agriculture Directorates, and District Agriculture Directorates are working together in the field for strict inspections. Additionally, teams from the General Directorate of Internal Trade and the General Directorate of Consumer Protection and Market Surveillance, which are affiliated with the Ministry of Trade, are also conducting intensive inspection activities in the field.

We especially request our citizens to report to our Ministry of Trade when they have complaints about businesses that exhibit greed and avarice.

At the beginning of 2025, all inspection fines will be increased by the revaluation rate of 43.93%. Excessive pricing practices aimed at victimizing our citizens and consumers will be punished severely based on the new fine amounts.

This is an important announcement to the public."
