Israeli attacks on Syria continue following the fall of the Assad regime.
ATTACK ON MILITARY POSITIONS
Israel conducted an airstrike on the Syrian capital, Damascus. According to the Syrian Human Rights Center, two military positions were targeted in the attack.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Following the intensification of clashes in Syria on November 27, the Israeli army's attacks on Syria increased simultaneously with the collapse of the 61-year-old Baath regime on December 8. The Israeli army, which began to destroy the military infrastructure and capabilities left by the regime's army, expanded its occupation in the Golan Heights, which is Syrian territory. Entering the buffer zone around the Golan Heights, the Israeli army advanced its occupation, reaching as close as 25 kilometers to the capital, Damascus.
Israel has been occupying the Golan Heights, which belong to Syria, since 1967. The borders of the buffer zone and the demilitarized zone were defined by the Forces Withdrawal Agreement signed between Israel and Syria in 1974. In a statement made by the Israeli army yesterday, it was noted that since the fall of the Baath regime, airstrikes have been conducted on 320 "strategic targets." Among the targets hit were Syria's air defense systems, missile depots, military aircraft and helicopters, as well as warships. The statement claimed that "more than 70% of the military capacity of Syria remaining from the Baath regime has been eliminated" in these attacks.
