Al-Thinni Tasked With Forming Libya Govt

01.09.2014 17:19

Al Oriebi said the new prime minister designate would present his new cabinet lineup to parliament by the end of this week.

Libya's parliament on Monday tasked Abdullah al-Thinni with drawing up an emergency government after approving his resignation before reappointing him to the premiership, a Libyan lawmaker has said.

"Parliament approved al-Thinni's resignation at the beginning of today's session and then asked him to form a new government [after reappointing him]," MP Eissa al-Oriebi told Anadolu Agency.

He said the new prime minister-designate would present his new cabinet lineup to parliament by the end of this week, noting that the new government would be granted the full mandate of an emergency government.

According to MP Sabah al-Hajj, 64 MPs out of a total of 77 who attended Monday's session voted in favor of al-Thinni's reappointment.

Libya has been plagued by fighting between a loosely organized national army and militias that held onto their weapons following the bloody 2011 uprising that ended the rule of long-serving ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

Capital Tripoli has been the scene of particularly fierce clashes between warring militias over control of the city's strategic infrastructure.
