Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered an ancient cemetery filled with over 300 mummies in an area known as the 'City of the Dead'. This cemetery is located near the modern Aga Khan III Mausoleum and spans an area of 270,000 square meters. In the past five years, 36 new tombs have been found, and it is estimated that these tombs were used from the 6th century BC to the 9th century AD. It has been noted that 30-40% of the remains belong to infants and young individuals who died from infectious diseases.

Archaeologists have discovered a tomb filled with over 300 mummies in an area known as the "City of the Dead" in Egypt. This ancient cemetery is located near the modern Aga Khan III Mausoleum and covers an area of 270,000 square meters.

An international research team has uncovered 36 new tombs in the area over the past five years. It is estimated that these tombs were used for approximately 900 years from the 6th century BC to the 9th century AD, and each tomb contains the remains of 30 to 40 individuals. Ayman Ashmawy, the head of the Egyptian Antiquities Department, stated that 30-40% of the remains belong to infants and adolescents who died from infectious diseases.

Archaeologist Patrizia Piacentini from the University of Milan is leading a research team to learn more about the ancient city of Aswan. Aswan was an important trading center, granite quarry, and military outpost established approximately 4,500 years ago.

Piacentini said, "This is truly a unique and unparalleled discovery in Egypt. The people of Aswan covered the hill with tombs. It's a kind of City of the Dead."

The City of the Dead was defined in 2019 with the discovery of a tomb containing the mummies of two children and later, presumably, their parents. Since then, every excavation has revealed dozens of new tombs and provided more clues about an undiscovered society that existed 2,000 years ago. It was revealed that the bodies were buried according to social class, with the elites found in the tombs at the top of the hill. The tombs belonging to various social statuses contained ceremonial gifts such as pottery and wooden carvings.

The best-preserved mummies will be sent to museums for long-term preservation and display, while others will be returned to their original locations after examination. Piacentini said, "This is their resting place. We uncover their stories and then put them back and close the tomb. This has been important to me from the beginning."
