The damage caused by the flood resulting from the heavy rainfall that affected Ankara last night became apparent with the dawn of the day. While the wall of a building collapsed, parked vehicles on the street were swept away by the floodwaters and accumulated at one point. A woman who was trapped in the apartment with her child and was rescued with the help of the fire department went into a panic attack upon seeing the final state of her home.

Floods and inundations occurred in the Keçiören district. In the area, the basements and ground floors of some houses and workplaces were flooded, and parked vehicles on the road turned into a lake were submerged. Some vehicles were also swept away by the water.

WALL OF THE BUILDING COLLAPSED

While the wall of a building collapsed on 1071st Street in the Adnan Menderes neighborhood of Keçiören, one person was injured in the incident. The destruction was captured by drone footage in the morning hours. In addition to the collapsed wall, some nearby buildings also suffered material damage. Vehicles parked on the street were swept away by the floodwaters and accumulated at one point.

WOMAN TRAPPED WITH HER CHILD IN THE HOUSE HAD A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN

Asuman Paker, who was trapped in her apartment with her child in the building with the collapsed wall, was rescued by the teams and taken to the hospital. After seeing the final state of her home when the daylight broke, Paker had a nervous breakdown.

"THE GLASS SHATTERED, WATER FLOODED IN"

Paker, who said that the situation she experienced was very difficult and could not hold back her tears, stated, "This was my home. I was at home with my child at that time. I had just come back from work. Suddenly, I heard an explosion. The windows shattered. Water flooded in, it exceeded our height. I experienced very difficult things at that moment."

While material damage occurred in the flooded apartment, it became unusable. The teams' work at the scene is still ongoing.

TEAMS WERE MOBILIZED

Upon citizens' notifications, health, fire brigade, AFAD, UMKE, and municipal teams were dispatched to the scene. While neighborhood residents tried to rescue their trapped neighbors with their own means, an elderly woman in a wheelchair was evacuated from the building with the help of citizens. AFAD teams rescued three people trapped in the building with the collapsed wall.

"WATER HAD REACHED THE BALCONIES OF THE SECOND FLOOR"

Speaking about the disaster, Murat Çakır said, "This is an event that happens every year. It was not a surprise for us. Similar events happen every year. Since this place is in a hollow, water collects here and cannot be drained. Everything was destroyed. Vehicles were left here. This is the first time I have seen the water rise this much. It had reached the balconies of the second floor. There is no damage in my house, but I couldn't enter yesterday. I had to stay at my sister's place. I hope the authorities find a solution to this."

"SAME EVENTS HAVE BEEN HAPPENING SINCE 2022"

Sebahattin Erge, who stated that he has been living in Keçiören since 2011, said, "I have no damage, but my neighbors are in a difficult situation. The same events have been happening continuously since 2022. Citizens are suffering. I managed to save my car and belongings at the last moment. There was damage in all the first floors. All belongings were damaged. One person's car became unusable. It has been like this for 4 years. Something needs to be done here. They shouldn't have built here in the first place. This used to be a stream. Homeowners shouted and ran outside. They didn't make earthquake insurance here. We had it done with our own money last year. The municipality also didn't build a wall here. We did that with our own means too," he expressed.
