Armenia will evaluate the withdrawal of troops from the Turkey border.

The Armenian Foreign Minister Mirzoyan made striking evaluations during a meeting with the press.

"RUS BORDER UNITS ARE TEMPORARY"

Pointing out the withdrawal of the Russian Border Guards from the Armenia-Iran border, Mirzoyan stated that with Armenia gaining the necessary capabilities for border protection and customs services, and the establishment of trust with Iran, Armenian forces have taken over control at the Iranian border and customs. The Foreign Minister emphasized that the Russian border units in his country are temporary, stating, "The Russian border guards were temporarily assigned until the Republic of Armenia established all the necessary institutions and capabilities within itself. They served the Republic of Armenia because, at that time, the Republic of Armenia could not perform these services and missions with its own forces. We thanked the Russian Border Guards at the appropriate time and stated that we could handle this task on our own at Zvartnots International Airport."

"WE CAN EVALUATE WITHDRAWAL FROM THE TURKISH BORDER"

Evaluating the situation at the Armenia-Turkey border, Mirzoyan expressed that they could consider the withdrawal of Russian units from the Turkish border when the Armenia-Turkey border is opened and mutual trust is established between the two countries.

SOME RUSSIAN UNITS HAVE WITHDRAWN

According to the agreement reached between Russia and Armenia in 1992, the services carried out by the Russian Border Guards at Zvartnots International Airport were transferred to the Armenian Border Guards as of August 1, 2024. The Russian Border Guards withdrew from the Armenia-Iran border in the last days of 2024, and Armenian forces took over border protection and customs services. The Russian Border Guards were responsible for the protection of the Armenia-Turkey and Armenia-Iran state borders under the agreement signed between Russia and Armenia in 1992.
