On the Italian island of Sardinia, a 29-year-old Algerian asylum seeker entered a restaurant with a knife, grabbed the woman at the cash register, and held a knife to her throat. The suspect, who also attacked customers and employees who intervened to save the woman, wounded 4 people. The attacker, apprehended by security forces, was sent to prison.
Frightening moments were experienced on Friday night on Italy's touristic island of Sardinia. A 29-year-old Algerian asylum seeker, who entered a restaurant in the city center of Olbia with a knife in his hand, headed towards the area where the cash register was located.
The suspect grabbed the woman there and held the knife to her throat. Customers and employees in the restaurant intervened against the attacker to save the woman.
HE DRAGGED THE WOMAN, THEN THEY FELL TO THE GROUND
During the scuffle that occurred while the attacker was holding the woman, the pair fell to the ground. Upon this, customers and employees in the restaurant moved to neutralize the attacker.
However, this time the suspect began attacking those around him with the knife in his hand. During the scuffle, 4 people were injured. It was stated that the condition of one of the injured was more serious than the others.
PANIC WAS EXPERIENCED IN THE RESTAURANT
Great panic was experienced in the restaurant due to the attack. While some of the customers tried to move away from the attacker, others intervened to stop the knife-wielding suspect.
Following the incident, upon the report made, security and health teams were dispatched to the region.
4 PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL
The 4 injured people were taken to the hospital after the first intervention by the health teams. While it was stated that one of the injured was wounded more seriously than the others, it was reported according to the information received that the injured did not have life-threatening conditions.
THE ATTACKER WAS CAUGHT
The security forces who arrived at the scene neutralized the 29-year-old attacker and took him into custody. After undergoing a health check, the suspect was later sent to prison.
Various charges were directed against the suspect, including assault, resisting a public official, aggravated threats, and carrying an object that could be used in an attack.
HE HAS AN INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION APPLICATION
Details regarding the attacker's legal status in Italy have also emerged. It was stated that the 29-year-old Algerian asylum seeker was legally present in Italy due to his international protection application.
It was also shared that the suspect had previously entered the records of the security forces due to incidents linked to some crimes committed against drugs and property.
HE HAD VISITED ANOTHER ESTABLISHMENT BEFORE THE ATTACK
According to the information that emerged within the scope of the investigation, the suspect also went to another establishment in the city center of Olbia before entering the restaurant where the attack took place.
The attacker, who then headed towards the restaurant, targeted the woman at the cash register there. It was stated that the restaurant management had seen the suspect around the establishment before but did not know him.
THE REASON FOR THE ATTACK IS BEING INVESTIGATED
The security forces are continuing their investigation to determine why the attacker entered the restaurant and why he targeted the woman. Currently, there is no confirmed information indicating a previously known feud or connection between the suspect and the restaurant employees.
