The case of the murder of Narin Güran, which has been on Turkey's agenda for months, has been concluded. The court panel sentenced mother Yüksel Güran, brother Enes Güran, and uncle Salim Güran to 'aggravated life imprisonment', while the informant Nevzat Bahtiyar received a sentence of 4 years and 6 months in prison.
DESCRIBED WHAT HAPPENED IN THE COURTROOM
Lawyer Bedia Teymur, the Editor-in-Chief of Haberler.com, who followed the second hearing of the case in person at the Diyarbakır Courthouse, described what happened in the courtroom during the 3-day process.
"A CONFESSION MAY COME FROM THE MOTHER"
Speaking on the Haberler.com YouTube channel, Teymur stated that the detention of mother Yüksel Güran has deeply affected the family. Teymur mentioned that a confession could come from Yüksel Güran in this context. He noted that in the current penal system, 'the defendant benefits from doubt', and that the defense attorneys frequently emphasize this. Teymur said, "The court applied the exact opposite. I believe the decision will be upheld in the appellate court as well. Perhaps in the next step after the appeal, once everything is finalized, there may be a resolution at the Supreme Court stage."
"THERE COULD REALLY BE SOMETHING IN THE NEXT STAGE"
Teymur expressed that the court's decision of 'aggravated life imprisonment' may have been given to lead the defendants to confess. He noted that blaming and arresting a woman in rural areas is considered 'very severe', and continued his remarks as follows: "The most we heard over the three days was the phrase, 'They tarnished our honor and reputation.' The mother, perhaps interrupting others, said, 'Honor is very important to us.' She stated, 'I have even forgotten Narin and started to think about my own reputation, honor, and chastity. Because they started to talk about this.' This is very important. But if you ask why it wasn't done until the last moment, I think it may not have been confessed because this thesis was followed. Or she may truly be innocent. We cannot know that; we will see. I believe that there could really be something in the next stage."
