Biden Consoles Family Of Slain Capitol Police Officer

US president hails William Evans as 'hero' as he lies in honor in Capitol Rotunda.

US President Joe Biden consoled the family of slain Capitol Police officer William Evans on Tuesday, telling them their deceased love one "was a hero."
"Losing a son, daughter, brother, sister, mom, dad -- it's like losing a piece of your soul," Biden said at a Capitol ceremony honoring Evans. "It's buried deep, but it comes back."
Biden was addressing a gathering that saw Evans' family come together with congressional leaders and top administration officials to pay tribute to Evans, 41, a little more than one week after he was fatally struck by a car while standing guard at a barricade on the Senate side of the Capitol building.
Evans is lying in honor in the Capitol Rotunda. He was killed on April 2 during a car-ramming that injured another officer.
Biden said he did not personally know Evans, but the officer reminded him of friends from his childhood.
"I didn't know Billy, but I knew Billy. I grew up with Billys in Claymont and Scranton, Pennsylvania. Billy was always the kid that you know if you got in a fight and you're outnumbered three to one, he'd still jump in, knowing you'd both get beaten," he said.
Evans is the second Capitol Police officer to lie in honor in the Rotunda after Brian Sicknick who died of injuries he sustained from rioters during a Jan. 6 assault on the federal legislature by supporters of former President Donald Trump. -
