In the scope of the 8.8 Parla Parla Bodrum event at Gümüşlük beach in Bodrum, lighting was reduced to draw attention to light pollution. Bodrum and Kos Island simultaneously dimmed their lights to deliver a shared awareness message.
Within the scope of the "8.8 Shine Shine Bodrum" event held in the Bodrum district of Muğla, the lighting on Gümüşlük beach was reduced. With the dimming of the lights, the stars and the night sky became more clearly visible, while Bodrum and Kos Island simultaneously gave a message of awareness against light pollution.
ATTENTION DRAWN TO LIGHT POLLUTION
In the "8.8 Shine Shine Bodrum" event, held for the fourth time this year in the Bodrum district of Muğla, the lighting on Gümüşlük beach was reduced in order to draw attention to light pollution.
With the lights turning off, the stars and the night sky became more clearly visible. The event, carried out in cooperation with the Bodrum District Governorate, the Bodrum Municipality Directorate of Culture, Arts and Social Affairs, the Directorate of Mukhtar Affairs, and the Bodrum Mukhtars Union Association, was attended by Gümüşlük residents, business owners, Bodrum Mukhtars Union Association Deputy President Göksel Çamlı, and project coordinator Merve Okutucu.
STARS VISIBLE WITH THE REDUCTION OF LIGHTS
Within the scope of the event, with the reduction of lighting along the coastline, the stars, which had become difficult to see due to city lights, became visible again. The event highlighted that excessive artificial lighting affects not only energy consumption but also the night sky, the ecosystem, and the life cycles of nocturnal creatures.
BODRUM AND KOS SURRENDERED TO DARKNESS SIMULTANEOUSLY
The most striking feature of this year's event was that Kos Island also participated in this practice simultaneously. While some lighting in Kos was reduced, Bodrum and Kos gave a joint message against light pollution by dimming their lights on the same night. This simultaneous practice on the two shores of the Aegean drew attention to the fact that light pollution is a common environmental problem that transcends borders. "8.8 Shine Shine Bodrum" aims to raise awareness about reducing light usage, energy conservation, protecting the night ecosystem, and passing on the starry sky to future generations.
