Bombing Kills 6 Egypt Policemen İn Sinai

Six Egyptian policemen were killed and five others injured Sunday when an explosive charge hit their armored vehicle in the restive Sinai Peninsula, a security source said.



According to the source, the vehicle was hit in southern Arish city, northern Sinai, with 80-kg highly explosive charge that was detonated remotely by a cell phone.



The attack, the source said, carries the fingerprints of Ansar Beit al-Maqdis militant group.



For the past year, the Egyptian army has waged a major offensive against militant groups said to be based in the northeastern Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip.



The region has seen a spate of attacks by unknown militants on security personnel since last year's ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the army.



Ansar Beit al-Maqdis had claimed responsibility for several attacks against the Egyptian army in the Sinai. It also took its battle against the authorities to Cairo and the Nile Delta where it also claimed responsibility for the bombings of several police headquarters.
