Bulgaria Arrests Ukrainian Passport Holder For Espionage At Power Plant

19.06.2024 19:12

Maritsa East 2 Power Plant listed as strategic installation, notes prosecutor.

Bulgaria arrested a suspect with a Ukrainian passport on espionage charges at a major power plant, media reports said Wednesday.

The 23-year-old who was holding a Ukrainian identity document was detained inside the Maritsa East 2 Thermoelectric Power Plant, the largest thermoelectric power plant in the Balkans, according to state-run BTA news agency.

Citing deputy prosecutor in Sofia, Hristo Krastev, BTA announced that the suspect was accused of gathering information to pass to a foreign power.

A search of the suspect's residence yielded drones, mobile phones, cameras and SIM and memory cards, it added.

The prosecutor said expert examinations are being carried out to determine if the suspect took pictures at the plant and, if so, whether the pictures contain information constituting a state secret.

The prosecutor noted the plant was listed as a strategic installation. -
