New products have been added to those exported from Turkey but returned due to high levels of pesticide residues (agricultural chemicals) or aflatoxin (mold disease).
Most recently, it was announced that roasted pistachios sent from Turkey to Bulgaria were returned with a 'serious' warning on the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) portal of the European Commission yesterday (December 10).
"AFLATOKSIN B1" FOUND IN PISTACHIOS
In the notification numbered 730668 published on the RASSF site regarding Bulgaria, it was stated that "Aflatoxin B1" was detected in roasted pistachios coming from Turkey as a result of the inspections.
According to the information on RASSF, the maximum allowed amount of Aflatoxin B1 in a product should be 8.0 mg/kg - ppm. As a result of the tests, this amount was found to be 25.6+/-7.7 mg/kg - ppm in roasted pistachios. Similarly, the total amount of Aflatoxin, which should be a maximum of 10.0 mg/kg - ppm, was found to be 28.7+/-7.8 mg/kg - ppm.
The detected Aflatoxins are toxic and carcinogenic substances. The most toxic one is Aflatoxin B1, which can cause both cancer and alter genetic structure.
"15 OUT OF 1320 SHIPMENTS RETURNED THIS YEAR DUE TO EXCESS AFLATOXIN IN PISTACHIOS"
On the other hand, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry recalled that a series of studies have been conducted in cooperation with producer and exporter unions to reduce the use of pesticides, stating, "This year, 15 out of 1320 shipments have been returned due to excess aflatoxin in pistachios. Products returned from abroad are subjected to analysis. Products that do not comply with regulations are not allowed to enter our domestic market."
It was stated that the number of rapid alert system (RASFF) notifications for food and feed decreased by 54% in 2023 compared to 2021.
