18.01.2021 12:57

Ruling party leaders say Tandav released by Amazon Prime has hurt religious sentiments.

Indian police have filed a case against Amazon Prime's country head for content, and makers of a latest web series for "hurting religious sentiments."

The case was registered in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh late Sunday against those involved in the making of political drama Tandav, which was released on Jan. 15.

Shalabh Mani Tripathi, media adviser to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, shared a copy of the complaint.

In a tweet, Tripathi said there is no tolerance for messing with public sentiments, and the case with serious sections has been registered against the entire team, which is "spreading hate in the guise of cheap web series."

The creators have been charged for allegedly depicting Hindu gods in a bad light, and promoting caste divide.

Manoj Kotak, a lawmaker of the ruling Bharatya Janata Party (BJP) also wrote a letter to Information Minister Prakash Javadekar, seeking a ban on the series, and regulation of online streaming services.

"OTT [over-the-top] Platforms having absolute freedom from censorship has led to repeated attacks on Hindu sentiments which I strongly condemn. spoke to hon. @PrakashJavdekar ji & requested that OTT content be regulated in the interest of integrity of India & we are fast moving in that direction," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, local media "ed sources as saying that the Information Ministry has sought a response from Amazon Prime on a complaint filed by a BJP lawmaker in the western Maharashtra state.

There has been no response from Amazon Prime so far.

In November, a police case was filed against two executives of Netflix after a complaint objecting to scenes in the BBC adaptation of Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy.

The government also announced rules to regulate content on video streaming platforms last year. -
