One of the biggest controversies in Italian cuisine this time led to a chef losing his job. Italian chef Davide Tamburella, working in Australia, clashed with restaurant management when he refused to prepare pineapple pizza. The incident brought the pineapple pizza debate—which MasterChef Türkiye judge Danilo Zanna has also frequently reacted to—back onto the agenda.
Chefs known for their adherence to Italian culinary traditions have this time seen their sensitivity over pineapple pizza turn into an employment crisis in Australia. Italian chef Davide Tamburella, working in Queensland, lost his job after refusing to prepare a ham and pineapple pizza requested by a customer. The reactions of MasterChef jury member Danilo Zanna in Turkey to this controversial issue in Italian cuisine have also come to mind again.
A PINEAPPLE CRISIS AT A $15,000 EVENT
The incident occurred at La Costa restaurant in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Davide Tamburella, who worked as head chef at the restaurant, was asked to prepare a ham and pineapple pizza for a private event that cost more than 15,000 Australian dollars.
However, the Italian chef refused to prepare the order, stating that he considered using pineapple on pizza an insult to his culture. Tamburella's failure to follow his manager's instruction caused the dispute at the workplace to escalate.
Moreover, this was not the first time the chef had refused to prepare pineapple pizza. Tamburella was reported to have objected to a similar request three times over four years.
DANILO ZANNA'S PINEAPPLE PIZZA REACTION IS BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT
The use of pineapple on pizza has long been a subject of debate in Italian cuisine. In Turkey, when this debate comes up, the reactions of Italian chef Danilo Zanna, one of the jury members of MasterChef Turkey, come to mind.
Zanna had frequently made headlines for opposing pineapple pizza on the program and in social media posts. His reactions at moments when contestants prepared pineapple pizza and his defense of traditional Italian cuisine had remained in viewers' memory.
The latest incident in Australia also brought Danilo Zanna's outbursts about pineapple pizza back to mind. However, Zanna has no connection to the incident in question.
ITALIAN CHEF'S UNFAIR DISMISSAL CASE ALSO REJECTED
After being fired, Tamburella applied to the Australian Fair Work Commission, alleging unfair dismissal. However, the Commission rejected the request because the application was made outside the legal time limit and no exceptional circumstances existed.
The ruling also included complaints that, in addition to the pineapple pizza dispute, the chef's communication style at work, use of inappropriate language, and conduct increased tension in the work environment.
The interesting part was that the restaurant did not last long either. La Costa closed in July due to the expiration of its lease and rising operating costs. Tamburella, meanwhile, began working as head chef at another Italian restaurant. The new restaurant's menu does not include pineapple pizza.
